What if awakening isn’t about escaping life at all…but finally learning how to live it?

That question became the heartbeat of my recent conversation with Lisa Ubanski on The Advisor Podcast with Stacey Chillemi, in an episode titled: “Ancient Wisdom vs Modern Life: Learn Which Is Better for Happiness.”

We explored the space between ancient spiritual teachings and the reality of modern human life — with its schedules, stress, technology, overwhelm, and constant sensory noise. And we went deep into the truth: Awakening isn’t separate from your everyday life — it’s embedded inside it.

This article expands the insights we shared on the podcast, weaving in the stories, teachings, and practices that can help you cultivate real presence in real life. Not in theory. Not in isolation. But in the beautiful, messy world you’re living in today.

The Road Trip That Became a Spiritual Initiation

Lisa began the episode by laughing and saying,“I’m glad you survived your road trip. Tell us what you just did.”

And truly… it felt like a rite of passage.

My partner Christopher and I had just:

  • Flown to Los Angeles

  • Retrieved my car

  • Drove to Austin to close his psychotherapy practice

  • Cleared and sold three bedrooms of belongings

  • Packed a tiny Kia Forte with three dogs and a mountain of luggage

  • Then drove three full days across Mexico

  • To relocate permanently to Puerto Vallarta and run our spiritual wellness retreat center

That kind of journey brings ancient teachings to life.

Long hours. Triggering moments. Old identities whispering. Shadow thoughts resurfacing. Feeling uninspired, numb, or just “blah.” No escape into distraction. Just presence.

I said on the podcast: “For hours, I felt numb and uninspired. And my mind went straight to: ‘Is something wrong with me?’”

But in that discomfort, a deeper truth landed: Awakening isn’t escaping the human experience —it’s learning to inhabit it more fully.

Not on the mountaintop. Not in meditation. But on a highway in the middle of Mexico, exhausted, overstimulated, and still learning to breathe through it.

Awakening Is Not Performance — It’s Presence

One of the core themes Lisa and I explored was the difference between performing spirituality and embodying it.

Ancient wisdom traditions always pointed toward one thing: Awareness.Presence.Embodiment.

Modern life pulls us in the opposite direction:

  • Constant notifications

  • Endless task lists

  • Hustle cycles

  • Emotional overload

  • Disembodiment

  • Survival mode

Our culture rewards productivity, not presence.

But as I shared in the episode: “If you’re not present in your life, you don’t know where you are. And if you don’t know where you are, you can’t know where you’re going.”

Awakening is simply the gradual return to your own attention.

Your Body: The Ancient Gateway to Awakening

To be awake, you have to be in your body.

During the conversation, I shared one of my practices for ending dissociation and re-entering embodiment: The 60-Second Sensory Body Scan

  • “This is my hand.” Touch your hand.

  • “This is my knee.” Touch your knee.

  • “This is my foot.” Touch your foot.

Location + sensation rewires the mind.

Every spiritual tradition taught this long before we had the language for the nervous system.

Your body is not the obstacle to awakening —it’s the portal.

Breath: The Ancient Technology Modern Life Forgot

Another thread we explored deeply was the role of breath in regulating the nervous system and opening the heart.

When you combine:

  • Deep breathing

  • Body awareness

  • One moment of genuine appreciation

…you enter heart–brain coherence, where ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience say transformation happens.

This is not poetry — it’s physiology.

  • The vagus nerve

  • The electromagnetic field of the heart

  • The alignment of brainwave states

  • The regulation of emotion

  • The re-patterning of your internal world

All activated through the simplest, most ancient mechanism: breathing with awareness.

When Ancient Wisdom Meets AI: A New Era of Awakening

Lisa was fascinated when we talked about SpiritSync Technologies — and how I’m using AI not to replace spirituality but to support it.

I shared about the app I’m building:

  • Tracks heart rate

  • Measures coherence

  • Helps users drop into meditative depth

  • Provides feedback during breath practice

  • Eventually integrates brainwave data

AI becomes a mirror for your inner state, not a distraction from it.

I said during the episode: “My goal is to help people access coherence in everyday life. Because when enough people are coherent, our collective reality shifts.”

Ancient wisdom always aimed to awaken the individual. Modern technology now offers tools to awaken the collective.

Compassion: The Sacred Fire for Modern Chaos

Lisa asked a powerful question: “How do you protect your energy without closing your heart?”

This is where ancient wisdom shines.

Not through bypassing. Not through numbing. Not through ignoring the world.

But through compassion.

I told her: “Compassion is forgiveness that deepens into love —and it has to begin with ourselves.”

Our modern world is full of noise, conflict, and intensity. Compassion is the ancient medicine that keeps us open without collapsing.

Are We in a Healing Crisis? Or an Awakening?

Lisa asked: “Do you feel like the world is going through a healing crisis?”

My answer: Not a crisis. A collective upgrade.

More people are waking up. More people are feeling. More people are shedding old identities. More people are encountering the sacred fire of resistance.

And because they don’t recognize it, they think something is wrong.

But ancient wisdom says: Pain is part of the path. Suffering is optional. Awareness is the turning point.

We are not collapsing. We are expanding.

And expansion is uncomfortable.

If You Take Only One Message From the Episode…

Toward the end of the podcast, Lisa asked: “If you could leave our audience with one message, what would it be?” My answer was simple: “You are already home.”

Your awakening isn’t ahead of you —it’s inside you.

Your coherence impacts everyone around you.

Your presence elevates your home, your relationships, your community.

Your nervous system becomes a lamp post in a world full of darkness.

And your compassion is a force field that reshapes reality.
